GIZ Bangladesh arranged a conference on ‘Sustainable Banking and Financing’ held on 30 September explored ways of scaling up sustainable finance to accelerate green growth. The deliberation involved topics like sustainable finance through the capital market and upscaling sustainable banking with particular focus on the role of the Bangladesh Bank. Banking experts, government officials, academics, and researchers took part in the discussions.
Ms. Sharifa Khan, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division and Chief Guest of the closing session, said that most of us are not aware of the environmental cost of development. She stressed the need to treat the green industry sympathetically for sustainable productivity and urged a shift toward green banking for a brighter, greener future.
Mr. Kazi Sayedur Rahman, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank graced the opening session as Chief Guest. Mr. A K M Sohel, Joint Secretary of the Economic Relations Division and Project Director of the Improved Coordination of International Climate Finance (ICICF) Project, emphasised on the importance of climate finance units in banks for ensuring the efficient utilisation of climate funds in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in partnership with ICICF project, implemented by GIZ, hosted the conference. A policy dialogue involving the high-level officials from Economic Relations Division, Financial Institution Division and Bangladesh Bank highlighting the gap between policy and implementation was part of this day-long conference
