Start Fund Bangladesh has been activated for Flooding in Feni, Noakhali and Khagracchari districts of Bangladesh
Start Fund Bangladesh has been activated by the networks member agencies to respond to the immediate needs of the flood affected communities in Feni, Noakhali and Khagracchari districts. A total of £122,064 has been allocated for this flood response with support from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and The Jersey Overseas Aid.
Crisis Context:
- Since 20 August 2024, heavy rainfall combined with the release of water from upstream in India has triggered severe flooding in several districts of Bangladesh, including Feni, Noakhali, Comilla, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria, Cox’s Bazar, Khagrachhari, Chattogram, Habiganj, and Moulvibazar.
- The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief reported on 23 August 2024 that the ongoing floods in Bangladesh have affected 4.5 million people across 77 upazilas in 11 districts, 193,864 people are in 3170 shelters, including 17848 livestock.
- The sudden floods have resulted in the deaths of 13 people, including two women. Among the deceased, four died in Cumilla, one in Feni, four in Chattogram, one in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur, and four in Cox’s Bazar
- All communication with all 6 upazilla of Feni is disconnected as of early mornings of 24 August, 2024.
- Communication with Muhuri and Halda river stations severed fully, leading to no information able to collect.
- Thousands of families are displaced, with significant damage to property, crops, and infrastructure.
- The military has been deployed to assist in relief efforts, including food distribution and rescue operations in different areas, including Comilla, Feni and Khagracchari districts.
- Approximately 11% of mobile towers in 10 flood-affected districts of Bangladesh have become inoperative, with 92% of towers in Feni district alone being out of service due to power outages and submerged areas according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
