Overall Situation:

Due to continuous rains in India’s Meghalaya and Asham, the onrush of upstream hilly waters and in-country rains, made rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj breached the danger mark and inundated the low-lying areas, including the cities. Mainly, several places of the 3 districts (Sylhet, Sunamganj and Moulvibazar) in the northeastern region of Bangladesh are inundated, and Sylhet and Sunamganj districts are affected severely – affected more than 1.8 million people. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) has been active on the ground from day one, and the local branch staff and Red Crescent Youth (RCY) volunteers are providing necessary humanitarian support to the affected communities in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

The monthly average seasonal rainfall has already exceeded in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. The extent of the flood inundated several sub-districts in these two districts. There is a forecast of heavy rainfall in those areas and adjacent catchment areas in the coming days, which may worsen the flood situation. According to different sources, more than 35,000 people moved to flood shelters in these two districts. Only in Sylhet, almost 75 per cent of areas, including 23 wards of the city and 1,548 villages in 13 upazilas (sub-districts), have been flooded, directly affecting over 825,000 people. In Sunamganj, flooding affected 560,000 people. Most of the roads in Companiganj, Gowainghat, and Kanaighat of Sylhet, and in Chhatak, Dowarabazar, Biswambharpur, and Sadar upazilas of Sunamganj have gone underwater, disrupting communications. In Sylhet city, heavy rains and the onrush of water from hills have flooded many areas, including Uposhohor, Machimpur, Bagbari, and Dargah Mahalla. It also causes knee-deep waterlogging in Sunamganj town. Overall improvement of the flood situation in various low- lying areas of the country’s northeastern part may continue in the coming days. However, any further rains or water coming from upstream will deteriorate the humanitarian situation.
