Bangladesh Re-elected as Member of FAO Council for Second Term

Bangladesh has once again achieved a significant milestone by being unanimously re-elected as a Member of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for the second consecutive term from the Asia Region. The announcement was made during the 43rd Session of the FAO Conference held in Rome, where representatives from 194 member states participated actively.

A press statement confirms that Bangladesh’s membership in the FAO Council will span three years, commencing from July 1, 2024, and concluding on June 30, 2027. This re-election showcases the country’s steadfast commitment to promoting agriculture and food security in the region.

As a member of the FAO Council, Bangladesh, along with other council members, will play a vital role in shaping the policies and executive decisions of the organization. They will provide guidance on the implementation of programs and budgets, monitor activities under the new results-based framework, oversee governance decisions, and ensure effective administration of the organization over the next three years.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Rome actively engaged in securing support for Bangladesh during the election process. The ongoing 43rd Session of the FAO Conference is being conducted in a hybrid modality at the FAO Headquarters in Rome.

Leading the eight-member delegation from Bangladesh is the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque. The delegation includes the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Wahida Akter, and the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Italy and the Permanent Representative to FAO, Md Shameem Ahsan. The Permanent Representative and the Economic Counsellor from the Embassy of Bangladesh also attended the conference in-person.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to leading international efforts to combat hunger and ensure food security.

It is worth noting that Bangladesh was previously elected as a member of the FAO Council during the 42nd Session of the Conference for the term from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2024.
