Urban waste management continues to be a pressing issue for Bangladesh in its quest for sustainable development. The government is exploring ways of transforming waste into a valuable resource through innovative waste-to-energy approaches. Supporting this endeavour, Policy Advisory for Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy project is conducting feasibility studies to assess the viability of waste-to-energy plants in Nawabganj, Keraniganj and Dohar areas.
Three stakeholder engagement workshops were organised in the areas to create awareness around this initiative, ensure local support and gain community insight. In collaboration with the local municipal partners, door-to-door surveys and transfer station assessments are now underway to identify the characteristics of the waste – which will lead the way towards pinpointing suitable technologies for the planned waste-to-energy plants.
